Grammy Commentary – Lil Wayne a Hot Mess, Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl Rocked It

Just a quick couple of comments about the 51st Grammy Awards tonight…

Lil Wayne and his crew (including Jay-Z for tonight) were really bad. And I don’t mean “bad” like good, or like Michael Jackson, I just mean bad. Well, maybe “bad” like Michael Jackson since about 1995. Now before anyone throws stones, please recognize that I’m no newcomer to hip-hop; I grew up on the stuff. It’s hard to stump me on anything hip-hop. But I can’t even hardly call what I heard tonight “hip-hop”, or anything close to it. I’m really over modern day rap. It flat-out sucks, no question about it. If you like ringtone rappers, then knock yourself out, there are a ton to choose from. But, as far as artists having any real measurable talent, they are few and far between right now. Hip-hop is a marketing tactic now; nothing more, nothing less.

A refreshing break from the norm was Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney…sorry, I meant “SIR” Paul McCartney. I’ve been a Grohl fan since the Nirvana days…there’s a hidden gem on one of the old imported Nirvana CD’s I used to have (still don’t remember what happened to it, doggone it) that Dave Grohl sang called “Marigold”…this was WAY pre-Foo Fighters. Ever since he started the Foo Fighters, I’ve been a fan.

Anyway, seeing Grohl back on a drum kit was a treat in & of itself. The song “I Saw Her Standing There” is a definite Beatles classic, and McCartney pulled it off pretty straight-laced. No complaints there.

The Sugarland duo on that song (“Chasing Papers” or something) with that cool other lady–didn’t catch the name, please forgive me–was pretty cool.

That’s it for me…I’m pretty much ready to go to bed.
